VOLUNTEERS CHANGE LIVES!
Literacy Volunteers of Kanawha County's greatest asset is the dedicated group of volunteers who donate their time and energy to help others in their thirst for lifetime learning. From our office staff to our tutors, we are all volunteers!

"My students look forward to their classes...
now that I see that,
it's enjoyable to see them learn and discover!"
TUTOR WITH US
Our tutors are very important to the success of our students! LVKC has spent over 30 years developing our program, which uses a goal-based approach and compliments the methods used by ProLiteracy America. We provide training, lesson materials, and ongoing support for tutors, free of charge.
During this time of pandemic, our training sessions are being held via zoom and scheduled approximately twice per year. Once tutors are trained, they are matched with a student. We match based on mutual availability, location, and interests. From there, we leave it up to the tutor and student. Scheduling and location is determined by the team.
LVKC is also proud to have partnered with other service providers and organizations in Kanawha County to help people improve their reading. Some of our students come to us through partnerships with places like Recovery Point Charleston, Goodwill of the Kanawha Valley, Kanawha County Schools, Catholic Charities and more!
WORK IN OUR OFFICE
Our office is staffed by volunteers, too. We are located in downtown Charleston at First Presbyterian Church. We are always looking for an extra set of hands to make sure we're able to keep the office open during the week. For the most part, it's pretty quiet, but it's a great time to get to know the organization! Primary responsibilities include answering the phone and emails, with other special projects as needed.
